A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 1:00 p.m., at St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church in Lafayette for Dennis Michael Canter.
Dennis, at age 62, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 22, 2014 at Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette, after a courageous fight with cancer.
Visitation will be observed at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette on Monday, February 24, 2014 from 4:00 pm to 9:00 pm and resumes Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 8:00 am until the time of services.
A rosary will be recited Monday, February 24, 2014 at 7:00 pm in the Fountain Memorial Funeral Home chapel.
Father Gilbert Dutel, of St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church in Lafayette, will officiate.
Military Service will follow in the Fountain Memorial Mausoleum in Lafayette.
Dennis was born Monday, December 10, 1951 in Houma, LA and lived most of his adult life in Lafayette.
He was a parishioner of St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church and a decorated Vietnam Veteran. Dennis was a man of great strength, loyalty and devotion to his country and his family. As an exemplary oilfield worker for over 40 years, Dennis modeled the morals of pride in work, respect for himself and others, and of a successful father and husband. His passion for the Saints and joy of life, will live on in all who were blessed to know him as husband, father, family and a friend.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Laura Savoy Canter; one son Adrien Canter and his wife Alison; one daughter Shauna Canter; and three grandchildren, Dillon, Hannah and Marc, all of Lafayette, LA. He is also survived by one sister Sharon Canter Toups and her husband Robert; one brother, Timmy and his wife Kathy, all of Houma, LA, along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer Fred Canter and the former Doris Guidroz; one daughter, Christian Marie Canter; two brothers, Charles and John Canter; and one sister Sandra Canter Scott.
Pallbearers will be Adrien Canter, Dillon Canter, Timmy Canter, Fred Canter, Robert Savoy and Randy Burford. Honorary Pallbearers will be Marc Canter, Dusty Canter, Stevie Higginbotham and Brent Castille.
The readings and music for the services will be provided by family and friends.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff of Dr. Michael Cain, Lafayette General Medical Center and the Cancer Center of Acadiana, for the compassionate care given to Dennis and his family.
