Born in Germany to Adolph and Ella (Müller) Schepp, Maria came to the US in 1953. Her sister, Martha, was the first wife of Karl Wallenda, so Maria joined their mother in a house behind the "big" Wallenda house on Arlington Street in Sarasota.

On Aug 26, 1960, she married Herman A. Pope in San Francisco. He died in 1993. She had no known children.

According to her mother's obituary, her father died in 1937 and her brother, Helmut, died in WWII, both in Germany. It was Helmut's son Deiter Schepp who died when the Wallenda Troup fell from the wire in Detroit, and his daughter Jana had been on the chair at the top off the pyramid, but was caught by Karl as she fell.
