ABBATE, Salvatore Francesco III
Passed away peacefully Saturday, December 10, 2005. Born in Los Angeles on July 20, 1935, Sal lived a life that took him around the world and to the stars. His work in the deep space program allowed him to live in many places, including stints in Germany, Italy, Madagascar, Turkey and several trips to The Dish in Australia, as well as deep space dishes in Japan and Spain. A 1954, graduate of Fairfax High School, Sal entered the army at Fort Ord, Calif., where he served as a radar systems operator. Like many young men of his day, Sal was drawn to the engineering challenges posed by the exploration of our solar system; therefore, after serving in the army he worked at Vandenberg Air Force Base. This
led to a 34 year career at Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, where he was a radio space engineer, involved in many unmanned deep space exploration missions, including Voyager, Cassini, Galileo, Magellan and the Mars Pathfinder. He was a genius in his field; but his humble, generous, and sacrificial qualities were what made him famous in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. Sal is survived by his beloved wife Marcia of Palmdale, daughters Angelique Abbate of Playa Del Rey, Susanne Buckley of Boise, Idaho and Therese Roberts of Georgetown, Texas and his son Mike of Portland, Ore. He also leaves his beloved sister Margaret of Ormond Beach, Florida. "Popa" will be missed terribly by his nine grandchildren: Julius, Cory, Nicolas, Timothy, Jason, Hannah, Elsa, Maryn and Brooke. Memorial Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2005, at the St. Andrews Abbey in Valyermo, Calif. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: St. Andrews Abbey in Valyermo at 31001 Valyermo Road, phone number: (661) 944-2178.
