Robert grew up in Oakland, NE. He entered the U.S. Army on May 1, 1918 and served until March 1919. He married Margaret L. Fritts (daughter of Wm. & Bessie Fritts of Sterling, NE) in September 1919 in Omaha, NE. They lived in Omaha and Robert was a brakeman for the railroad. They moved to Sioux City, Iowa by 1928. Margaret remarried in 1930. Robert moved to McGehee, Arkansas and was a switchman for the railroad. He returned to Omaha, NE by 1932.
Robert & Margaret married again in Omaha, NE in January 1932. They again divorced. Robert was treated at the National Soldiers Home in 1932 in Leavenworth, KS for leg & hip problems. He had a residence with his sister in Omaha, NE and still worked as a switchman for the railroad.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army at Ft. Crook, Nebraska in 1942. He was discharged in December 1944.
