Charlsie Maxine Rhodes Adams passed away Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, in Brentwood, Tennessee.
She was born May 13, 1922, in Speegleville, Texas, to Charles Rhodes and Mae Williams Rhodes.
Maxine lived a life marked by rich experiences and adventure. After her childhood in rural Texas, where she played the trombone in her high school band, she followed her beloved older sister, Louise, to Ruston, Louisiana, where she found work in the offices of T. L. James and Co.
As one of the earliest licensed female pilots in the state, she flew people, documents, and construction materials around the region for her employers.
Ruston was also where she met William Roy Adams, Jr., they married in 1948, and remained together for 64 years until Roy's death in 2012.
Together, Maxine and Roy lived a life full of interest. Beginning with their first home together in the oilfields of western Venezuela, they moved often. By the time they retired to the Dallas area in 1981, they had lived in many places around the world, including New York, Rome, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, London, Houston, and Bermuda. Through it all, Maxine enjoyed the company of many friends, entertained extensively and graciously, traveled widely, and developed a number of pastimes. Always athletic, her special love was for golf, which she played around the world.
Maxine and Roy had two children, Charles Hansford and Catherine Estelle. She was a wonderful mother, supporting her children with love and devotion through every stage of their lives. Her greatest joy in life came from being a mother, and she never wavered in her dedication to her children's happiness.
She is survived by Charles and his wife, Rhonda, of Tampa, Florida; Catherine and her husband, Peter Barton Hutt, of Aubrey, Texas, and Alexandria, Virginia; two granddaughters, Amanda Scarlett and Allison Henson, both of Nashville, Tennessee; and two great-grandchildren, Sullivan and Savannah.
Maxine was an active volunteer for many organizations, especially Meals-On-Wheels, Oak Lawn Methodist Church in Dallas, and Washington Regional Hospital in Fayetteville, Arkansas. She was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
Visitation will be at the Connally-Compton Funeral Home in Waco, Texas, at 8 a.m., Saturday, November 7. Burial will be at 9 a.m., the same day at Oakwood Cemetery in Waco.
