Maynard grew up on the family farm near Oakland, NE. After his father retired from farming and moved to Uehling, Maynard continued on the farm with his brother, Alan, into the 1940's. He joined the Army in 1942 and spent one year as a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II. He was discharged in 1945.
Maynard married Velva Nelson on 23 April 1946 in Oakland, NE. They lived in Uehling, NE and Maynard owned and operated a feed and seed store. He was a member of the American Legion Post 196, VFW Post 5543, the Polar Bear Association of World War II and the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oakland, NE. He was a also a member of the Uehling Volunteer Fire Dept.
Maynard and Velva had one daughter, Suzanne.
