Helen Lucille (Spurgeon) Dabney was born in Bloomfield, Iowa on April 19, 1926 to Loris Dillon and Audra Marie (Vandike) Spurgeon and died on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, Missouri.

She graduated from the Bloomfield High School in Bloomfield, Iowa in 1944 and on May 5, 1946, Lucille married her neighbor boy, Russell Eugene Dabney and to this union three boys were born, Marc Eugene, Chris LaVern and Jay Bert. In 1948, they moved to Lancaster, Missouri where they owned and operated the Lancaster Cleaners for many years.

Lucille worked at Farmers Home Administration in Bloomfield, Iowa for five years, and then began working in Lancaster at the Social Welfare Office. She began working at the Bank of Lancaster in Lancaster, Missouri in 1957; saw consolidation of the two local banks and several name changes, retiring as Senior Vice President in 1991 from the Northeast Missouri State Bank after 34 years of banking. She then worked for seven years at the local high school as a paraprofessional in the Special Needs Department.

Surviving are her children, Marc Dabney and wife, Reta of Lancaster, Missouri, Chris Dabney and wife, Jan of Lancaster, Missouri and Jay Dabney of Kirksville, Missouri; five grandchildren, Jenika and husband, Mark Johnson of Columbia, Missouri, Stacey and husband, Ryan of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, Cody Dabney of Lancaster, Missouri, Eric Dabney and wife, Laura of Lancaster, Missouri and Clinton Dabney of Lawson, Missouri; 12 great grandchildren, Cade, Liam, Alaina and Elias Johnson, Parker, Prestyn and Pierson Dabney, Jaxson and Harrison Kaden, Kaylum Dabney and Clara and Ella Dabney; 1 sister, Lillian Joan McClure and husband, Jerry of Tucson, Arizona; sisters-in-law, Mary Ann Fisher and Glenna Dabney both of Bloomfield, Iowa; 1 brother-in-law, Hershel Craig of Tucson, Arizona; many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Preceding Lucille in death were her parents; her husband; 5 sisters, Lorene Whitacre, Louise Kincart, LaVonne Craig, Linda Hendricks, Lenore Spurgeon in infancy and two brothers, Loren Dwayne and Willis LaVern Spurgeon in infancy.

Although God and her family were her first loves, she always loved and was involved with music. She began playing a cornet when in grade school and continued most of her life playing taps at many military funerals both in Bloomfield, Iowa and Lancaster, Missouri. She played for many years in concerts and in a dance band both in Bloomfield, Iowa and Lancaster, Missouri. She sang for many weddings, funerals and at church activities. She was baptized in the Bloomfield Christian Church when she was 13 years old and transferred her membership to the Lancaster Christian Church when she and her husband moved to Lancaster, Missouri. She remained an active member until her health failed, having taught Sunday school class, sang in the choir and helped in the kitchen when needed.

She was a past Worthy Advisor of Rainbow for Girls, a 50-year member of the PEO Sisterhood, Past Matron and a 50-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and a "bridge club" member.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Lancaster Christian Church in Lancaster, Missouri with Sonny Smyser, Pastor of the Schuyler County Church of Faith officiating. Music will be provided by Maureen Watkins, organist and Beth Withrow, soloist. Special selections will be "How Great Thou Art" and "The Lord's Prayer". Pallbearers will be Eric Dabney, Cody Dabney, Clinton Dabney, Mark Johnson, Cade Johnson and Ryan Kaden. Honorary pallbearers will be Curly Judd, Robert Watkins, Don Hilliard and Leo Schupbach. Visitation will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2014 at the Norman Funeral Home in Lancaster, Missouri between the hours of 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. Memorials have been established for the Maplewood Farm Group Home. Burial will be in the Arni Memorial Cemetery in Lancaster, Missouri.
