Martha Kuhn McCracken, 96, of Claysville, died at 7:10 a.m. Thursday, March 27, 2014 in Donnell House, Washington, after being in failing health since November.

She was born September 13, 1917 in Roscoe, a daughter of the late Noah Garfield and Martha Robson Wick. Following the death of her mother, she was raised by foster parents,(aunt and uncle) Martha and Thomas Hughes, and resided with them and their children, Robert, Raymond, Catherine, Evelyn and Floyd Hughes. She attended school under the Hughes name.

Mrs. McCracken was a former member and Sunday school teacher at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in East Finley Township and was a current and active member of the Claysville United Methodist Church.

She graduated from beauty school at the age of 15. Too young to work, she traveled her neighborhood, cutting hair and doing perms, marcel waving and face massages. She was employed by the former Duncan Miller Defense Plant in Washington. She was last employed for several years in retail shoe sales, her last employer was the former Keystone Shoes.

Mrs. McCracken enjoyed baking and delivering her homemade buns to friends and neighbors, which she did well past the age of 90. She volunteered with her late husband as "Mrs. Claus" during many Christmas seasons. She enjoyed square dancing as long as her health permitted.

She was a member and former worthy matron of the Evening Star Chapter 187, Order of the Eastern Star of Claysville.

In 1933, she married Fred Arthur Kuhn, who died in 1962, and in 1969 she married Basil McCracken Jr., who died December 14, 1998.

Surviving are a daughter, Beverly J. Sloane, companion of Miller Bostich, of Claysville; seven grandchildren, Darlene Kuhn Coone, Fred R., husband of Cheryl Kuhn, Tod Kuhn, Wendy, wife of Don Dorsey, Amy, wife of Randy Shrader Sr., Jamie Bedillion, companion of Michael Bedillion, James R. Sloane Jr., husband of Erin Sloane; 13 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, foster parents and husbands, are a son, Fred Richard Kuhn, who died in November 2013; three brothers, Harold, Gerald, and Samuel Wick; and a sister, Olive Sweet.

Friends will be received from 1 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the Claysville United Methodist Church, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 1, with the Rev. Rico Vespa officiating. Interment will follow in the Claysville Cemetery. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Claysville United Methodist Church, 1279 Route 40 West, Claysville, PA 15323. The Evening Star Chapter 187, OES, will conduct a memorial service in the church at 7 p.m. Monday. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Funeral Home Inc., Rogersville.
