David Riste was born the third child and second son to Ole and Emily Riste née Knutson on Dec. 10, 1941 in Medicine Hat, Alberta. He was raised on the family farm (NW5-20-10-W4M). He went to school in a bunkhouse located on the farm, finished grade ten and then went to help out on the farm. He also worked at various jobs including roadwork and as a ferryman on the Jenner ferry in 1980. He loved the cowboy life. David and his brother Earl bought the family farm in 1968, and divided the land into two separate farms. David developed a "new" farm site at 20-10-W4M and raised grain, cattle and horses. David had a wonderful sense of humor and liked to play jokes. He will be remembered for his love of horses; for his willingness to help his neighbors, especially at calving and branding times; for being a handyman and for his love of hunting. David married Elizabeth (Liz) Anne Varga on Jan. 8, 1976 in Brooks and they raised one daughter, Laura Faye (Calvin) Bassett née Riste. David died, age 62, on Sept 1, 2004, in Brooks AB and is interred beside Liz in Rainy Hills Cemetery, Iddesleigh, AB.
