On April 23, 1861, he enlisted in Company "F", 1st Maine Volunteer Infantry and mustered into Federal service on May 3rd. After his honorable discharge on August 5, 1861, Augustus returned to New Hampshire, and on November 1, 1861, at Manchester he enlisted in Company "F", 8th New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry for a period of three years. He mustered in once again for Federal service, on December 20, 1861, as a Corporal, and left for Boston with his regiment. The regiment sailed for Ship Island, Mississippi Sound, arriving there March 15, 1862. The regiment then moved to New Orleans and duty at Camp Parapet until October.

Battles, Skirmishes, and Engagements: Expedition to Lake Pontchartrain July 23 – August 2. Operations in District of LaFourche October 24 – November 6. Occupation of Donaldsonville October 25. Action at Georgia Landing, near Labadieville, October 27, and at Thibodeauxville October 27. Duty in the District of Lafourche until March 1863. Expedition to Bayou Teche January 12–14, 1863. Aboard the steamer Cotton on January 14. Operations on Bayou Plaquemine and the Black and Atchafalaya rivers February 12–28. Operations against Port Hudson.

Reduced to ranks on January 8, 1863. Captured by Confederate forces during the Assault on Port Hudson on June 14, 1863, but on July 9, he and several others from his regiment were recaptured by Union troops, and he was returned to his regiment. He re-enlisted as a veteran volunteer on January 4, 1864, after having been promoted to Sergeant three days earlier. Involved in many more skirmishes near Alexandria, Louisiana during the following Spring, on May 18th at Yellow Bayou he was seriously wounded and died two days later at Simmesport, Louisiana.
