Harry was the son of Nancy Jane Bowyer and John Boston Hostetler. He graduated from Lexington Bible College in 1896. His ministry brought him to Tower Hill, Illinois where he met and married Roselle Mae Crook on May 18, 1898. For 40 years he ministered to Christian churches in Illinois, Colorado and Indiana.

He and Roselle were the parents of 12 children: Veryl June; Purcell Matthew; Verne Elwood; Harry Blythe; Nancy Loyal; Joshua; Roselle Montana; J. Fred; Helen; Ruth; John Clinton and Mary Gene.
