Martin, son of Irish immigrants but born in England, emigrated with them at age 3 to Wayne, Bartholomew, Indiana, United States. His father, John Patrick Fitzgerald, died in Mar 1864; Martin was only 9 at the time.

On 8 Jan 1878 he married Cecelia (Celia) Agnus Duffy in Edinburg, Johnson, Indiana. They resided in Edinburg, Johnson, Indiana in 1880; he was working for the railroads. By 1900 the family was living in Evansville, Vanderburgh, Indiana, and he is listed as a section foreman. They have 10 children.

In 1903 Celia died, and by 1910 the youngest unmarried children have moved to Portland, Oregon, leaving Martin behind to live with his oldest daughter. By 1920 he is living in the Little Sisters of the Poor home for the poor, until his death. Family oral tradition is that he became alcoholic with the death of his wife. They are buried in adjacent plots.
