Genevieve A. Austin, 81, died on Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2005, at Evansville Manor after suffering a stroke on Feb. 13, 2003. She was born in Marshfield, WI, on July 17, 1924, the daughter of William and Marie (McDonald) O’Neill. After completing school, she enlisted in the Women’s Army Corps and served in the Medical Branch during World War II. On June 24, 1942, she married Franklin E. Austin in San Francisco, CA. After her discharge from the service, she and her husband returned to Marshfield and in 1946 they moved to Janesville. Gen was employed for 31 years at Mercy Hospital in Janesville, and after her retirement she spent endless hours in volunteer work. She was an avid Packer fan, enjoyed playing cards, and for many years she organized groups of friends for the Fireside Theater plays. Franklin died on April 6, 1975, and in 1981 she married Robert Fisher. He preceded her in death in 2004. She was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church, Janesville, VFW Auxiliary, the Over 50 Club of St. John Vianney Parish, and was a volunteer for ECHO. Gen was active in doing for and giving to others. She was always there to lend a hand when anyone was in need. She derived most pleasure in visiting the sick and being with those who were marginalized by society. Her family and friends will sadly miss her. She is survived by her daughter, Ann M. Austin of Carefree, AZ; son, John Austin (special friend, Gale Carlson) of Prairie du Chien, WI; 2 grandsons, Wesley Austin and Daniel Austin, both of Prairie du Chien; 4 brothers: John J. (Dorothy Daley) O‘Neill of Dubuque, IA, Rev. William L. O’Neill, C.P.P.S. of Carthagena, OH, Robert F. (Agnes Nauman) O’Neill of Janesville and Gerald S. (Carol Schoenig) O’Neill of Wisconsin Rapids; 2 sisters, Sr. Catherine O’Neill, F.S.P.A. of LaCrosse and Marietta J. (William) Halpin of Prairie du Chien; stepdaughter, Barbara Bias of Knoxville, TN; stepdaughter-in-law, Sandra Fisher of Lakewood, CO; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 husbands; a brother, Thomas J. O’Neill; and 2 sisters, Margaret (Fred) Fraunfelder and Eileen (Timothy) Casey.
