Dale Crouch, 13. Drowns While Swimming in River; Was to Graduate Sunday

Dalo Crouch, 13 son of Mr. and Mrs. Willis Crouch. 3 Brighton, drowned in the Grasse River a half mile west of the village limits near the sand-bar at 2:15 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 1954.

An altar boy at Sacred Heart Church, he was to have been graduated from the ninth grade at the parochial school there Sunday.

Artificial respiration administered at tihe scene by Trooper Walter McDonald of the Massena substation
and Oakie Witherill plus more than an hour's attention with the resuscitator used by the volunteer fire department, failed to revive the youth.

Tho Rev. John Pendergast, newiy-appointed assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Church, was summoned and administered last rites of the Roman Catholic Church.

Dr.. Philip Mardon pronounced the boy dead at 3:25 p.m.. He said the youth was evidently dead when pulled from the water.

William Jawan, 11, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jawan, 25 Roosevelt St was swimming in theGrasse River at the time of the accident ran to the William Brassard home about 200 yards away to call for help.

The Brassards notified state police and firemen.

Norman R. LaFrance, 14, who resides next to the Village Inn, was the first to reach the victim by boat. He told troopers he grabbed Dale's hair but was unable to hold onto him. When the boy slipped from sight in the water, Norman and several youths began diving for him.

Trooper McDonald, after arriving at the scene, flagged down Mr. Witherill to aid him in giving artificial respiration.

By the time they arrived, young LaFrance and Lonnie Gauthier, 15, Racket River, had brought; the Crouch youth up and onto shore.

Before troopers and firemen arrived, Miss Annette Fenton administered artificial respiration.

Dale was swimming, about 50 feet off the north shore when he evidently suffered a cramp. The other youtihs heard his call for help but thought he was playing at first. Ronald C. Dafoe, 14, 2 Brighton St., was was swimming in the area at the time.

Several volunteer firemen who aided in the rescue work were Henry Ledger, Thomas Bourdon, Joseph Kish, Dominick Zappia, Harold Smith, Clifford Weegar and Howard Baxter.

The boy's father, Willis Crouch, a shift foreman in the Rotary Station at Massena Works of Alcoa, said he had just punched in to work on the 4 o'clock shift when he was called by his wife to go to the scene. He arrived just as his sonwas being carried from the river's edge to the waiting Donaidson ambulance. The body was removed to the Phillips Memorial Home.

Mrs. Florence Dunlap Madrid, county coronor, gave a verdict of accidental death by asphyxiation
due to drowning. No inquest of autopsy was held.

Dale was born in Massena July 10, 1940, the son of Willis and Gladys Currier Crouch.

Surviving are his parents a brother, Charles, Buffalo, who was home visiting his parents and a sister, Mrs. Nolan (Beverly) Sheldon, Nicholville, and the maternal grandmother, Mrs. Mary Crouch, Massena.

Funeral services wjill he held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sacred Heart Church with burial in Calvary Cemetery. The body is remaining at the family home.

It was the second downing here this season. Richard Rode, 6, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Rode, 26 Depot St., drowned May 8 when he fell from a boat in the Racket River near the Main St. bridge.
