William Richardson was the seventh of twelve children born to Benjamin and Judith (Mason) Richardson. He accompanied his family to Hudson, and then to Johnstown, New York, and his father taught him the blacksmith trade. He came to Roscoe in 1846, but during the following year, he returned east to Massachusetts with the intention of not returning, but then during the following year, he decided to return to Roscoe and brought his mother with him. In 1849, he set up his blacksmithing operation in Roscoe. On 12 February 1850 he married Lucy Ann Warner, and they were the parents of one daughter. William manufactured plows in Roscoe for thirty years and also did general mechanical work. He was also an ardent sportman who loved to hunt and fish.
