A. B. Steel was born in Wetzel county, W. Va June 11, 1836, and was a son of
Thomas and Jerusha (Garrison) Steel, deceased. He has been twice married, first
to Sylvania Payne, who died September, 1865, leaving these children: Mary E.,
dec., Josephine, dec., and Lucinda, dec. He was married secondly, March 10,
1867, in Greene County, Pa, to Franna Stanberry, who was born in 1833, in
Indiana. She was a daughter of Justice and Almeda (Funk) Stansberry not now
living. Five children have graced this union Oscar D, Ida M., Nora E., Jennie
A., and Sarah C. Comrade Steel served a short time in the Union army during the
late war. He had been engaged in farming when he was enrolled at Wheeling,
W.Va., March 1865 as Ord Sergt. in Co. A, 3d W. Va V. Cav. Owing to his late
enlistment he did not take part in any battles and was honorably discharged
July, 1865 at Wheeling, W. Va. His brothers Frederick and George, served in the
late war in the same company as our subject; his father served in Co. B. Indpt.
inf, during the late war. Comrade Steel is well known in the walks of civil
life, having served as J.P. of this county fourteen years and also notary
public. He is now leading a retired life and his address in Childs, W. Va.
