Mac Wayne Huss was the son of Charles Edward Huss and Blanche Dell Griffith.

On February 5, 1954 in Boise, Idaho, Mac married Shirley Jean Dicus. Mac and Shirley had children: Debora Gale, Randall Lee, Bradford Dean, and Gregory Kay.

Mac died from injuries suffered when the private plane he was a passenger on made an emergency landing on the north end of an unfrozen Great Salt Lake. The plane was traveling from Ogden, Utah to Sacramento, California and had departed at 11:17 a.m. Twenty-five minutes later, the pilot told the tower at the Salt Lake International Airport that he had engine trouble and wanted to return to Ogden. A minute later, his plane disappeared from radar. Despite strong evidence that the plane had crashed into the lake, the first search plane was not launched until 1:15 p.m., one and one-half hours after the plane went down. By then, Mac; his sons, Randy and Brad; and brother, Vern, had slipped into a hypothermia-induced coma in the lake's 36-degree water.
