GUSTAFSON, Elizabeth Ruth Johnson died Saturday, March 29th, 2014 at home with her family present.

Betty was born September 22nd, 1923 in Iowa City, Iowa.

She was the daughter of Oliver T. and Myrtle (Fisher) Furst.

As a child the family did many things together. When she was 10, the entire family got hepatitis with her mom in the hospital and in bed all summer. When it was time to take out the tonsils, instead of doing one kid, the doctor took out the tonsils of her brother, Pat, sister, Shirley and her. Betty lived on a farm and liked to do "extreme" sports, accidentally; she ran as fast as she could out of the hay mow expecting to land in a wagon of hay, instead hit the ground beyond the wagon. She broke one rib that stuck out the rest of her life. In high school, Betty played basketball all 4 years. As a freshman, her basketball team finished 3rd in the state. She was also deemed to have perfect feet in high school. Betty met her first husband, Bruce Johnson, as a hired hand working on the family farm. He volunteered for the Air Force was a pilot and died in Burma practicing dives. Their daughter Carol was born weeks after his death. Betty met both her husbands at the family farm, Bruce and then Robert Gustafson years later. Both were hired hands. Robert and she had 2 children, JoAnne and Jon. Betty majored in Home Economics at Iowa State College and received her master's degree in education from Wittenberg University. She taught 7th science and home economics at Northwestern Schools outside Springfield, Ohio for 18 years. Betty was a member of Homemakers Club of Springfield, Ohio for decades. She had many friends in her club, and loved to visit with them. For 10 years she was a constant companion and caregiver for her husband, Robert suffering from emphysema. Betty was a devoted wife, mother and teacher, and will live on in the hearts of many.

Survivors include three children, daughter, Carol (Ronald) Johnson Rasmusson, San Antonio, Texas, daughter, JoAnne (James) Gustafson Manore, St. Joseph, Michigan, son, Jon Gustafson, Springfield, Ohio; three grandchildren, Dane Corey Rasmusson, Jennifer Lynn Foster and Robert David Foster.

Memorial services will be held at Saron Lutheran Church, 510 Main St, Saint Joseph, MI, on Tuesday, April 1 at 10 AM.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice at Home, 4025 Health Park Lane Saint Joseph, MI 49085
