Mary Grunnagle, 1st principal at south, dies
Mary Sullivan Grunnagle 88, first principal of South School, died recently in a Monterey Hospital.
A native of Merced, she moved to Tracy with other members of the Sullivan family in 1904. Her father, Lawrence Sullivan, was a foreman in the farming operations of Tracy's first mayor, Abe Grunauer, and her uncle, Tom Driscoll, was manager of the Tracy Hotel for C.A. Slack.
Mrs. Grunnagle attended Old Willow School and later attended Stockton High School before Tracy High was established. After becoming a teacher, she taught at old Central School on Central Avenue, joining Elsie Salcido and Violet Sehrt as early members of the teaching staff.
In 1925, Mrs. Grunnagle became the first principal of the new South School, located where McDonald Park is now.
Three years later in 1928, she married George Grunnagle, owner of the Grunnagle Funeral Home in Hollister, and moved to that city. The Grunnagles operated the funeral home for more than 50 years before retiring in 1970. Mr. Grunnagle died in 1976.
Mrs. Grunnagle was founder of the Red Cross blood bank in Hollister and directed its operation for nearly 30 years. A Red Cross chapter chairman during World War II, she helped families and servicemen communicate with one another, and she was a longtime volunteer at Fort Ord Hospital. She was named citizen of the Year in San Benito County in 1979.
Survivors include a sister, Harriett A. Mann of Sequim, Wash.; a niece, Barbara Gatze of Tracy; and a nephew, Lawrence Frank of Dillingham, Okla.
Services were conducted in Hollister at Grunnagle Funeral Home and at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Entombment was at Calvary Cemetery in Hollister.
