He was the son of John Entrkin, Sr. and Frances Moore.

At the age of eighteen, he enlisted for three years in the 114th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Co. A., on Aug 12, 1862 and served all three years. He was in the battles of Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, siege of Vicksburg, Graham's Plantation, Yellow Bayou and the siege at Fort Blakely, Ala. He very nearly escaped honorable wounds but on Apr. 9, 1865, the very last day of the war, he was wounded twice at Fort Blakely, and was honorably discharged at New Orleans on June 8, 1865.

After his return home, he entered the Ohio Wesleyan university and graduated in the classical course in 1867. For several years he was engaged in teaching and from 1869 to 1870, he was professor of mathematics in the Central Wesleyan College of Warrenton, Mo. During that time he studied law, and in Jan of 1870 was admitted to the bar. In Jan of 1872, he was appointed solicitor of Chillicothe and was re-elected in 1874 and 1876.

On June 8, 1873, he enlisted in the Ohio State Militia as a private in Co. A, and was soon made lieutenant, then captain of the company. In 1876, he was elected colonel of the 6th regiment Ohio National Guards. In 1894 he was appointed Brigadier General.

On July 15, 1875, at Chillicothe, he was married to Mary F. Bethanser. They had two children: Helen G., and John C. Jr.
