"PROFF. BURNS READ OF MINES SCHOOL FACULTY IS DEAD
Veteran of First World War Had Been ill for a year.
J Burns Read,60, a professor and head of mining engineering department of Colorado School of Mines at Golden, since 1928 died Saturday in ST Anthony's Hospital in Denver Colorado after a years illness.
A native of Rapid City,SD, Professor Read received his science and mining engineering degree at the South Dakota School of Mines.Before coming to Colorado he was assistant superintendent of a copper smelter at Rapid City in 1906.
From 1911 to 1917 when he entered the United States army where he served during World War 1 as an ordinance captain, he was assistant professor of mining, and subsequently head of the mining and metallurgical department of the Case school of Applied science. He held a reserve commission as an ordinance major a the time of his death.
Immediately after the war, Professor Read became associate professor of mining at the University of Illinois and was later employed as a assayer,surveyor and chemist by various western mining companies.
At one time he was manager of a mining company in British Guiana, and spent his 1st honeymoon there, and from 1920 to 1927 was assistant director of the research department for the Metals Exploration company in Denver.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Crowell Read, a native of West Point Miss.to whom he was married in June of 1939, at Golden; a daughter Dorothy McCain of Rapid City SD, two sons;Dr Donald Read of New York City, and Warrant Officer Frank Read with the United States army in the South Pacific; his mother Katherine Read of Rapid City SD, and two brothers, Frank of South Dakota, and Herbert in Quebec Canada.
FORMER RESIDENT PROFESSOR BURIED
Services were held Monday in Golden Colo, for J Burns Read,, 60,native of Rapid City and professor and head of the mining engineering department of the Colorado School of Mines at Golden since 1928, who died in Denver Saturday after a years illness.
Attending the services from Rapid City were a son-in-law and daughter Mr and Mrs Winfield R McCain.
Read received his bachelor and mining engineering degree form the South Dakota School of Mines in 1906 and 1908 and for a time was superintendent of the old gold smelter.
Surviving are his wife, Virginia Crowell Read, a native of West Point Miss, whom he married in June of 1939 at Golden, a daughter Mrs McCain of Rapid City SD, two sons Dr Donald Read of New York City, and Warrant Officer Frank Read it the United States army in the south Pacific, his mother Katherine Read of Rapid City and two brothers Frank in Porcupine SD and Herbert in Quebec Canada."
