Mary was born in Indianapolis. She was raised on a dairy and crop farm. She was a student at Cartersburg and Belleville Elementary Schools. She graduated in 1949 from Clayton High School. Mary then attended Indiana Business College for one year and worked at a five and dime store in Indianapolis. She married Richard Zimmerman on May 1, 1952 in Plainfield, Indiana. They lived on the family farm and had four children together. They divorced in 1965.
Mary then became employed at W. H. Block department store. She worked as a cashier in the basement lingerie department. In 1969, Mary gained employment with the State of Indiana. She worked at the State Office Building in Indianapolis. Mary Kay worked as a data entry operator in the Paid Mail department for five years. When this department closed, she was transferred to Titles and Registrations Department. There she corrected vehicle titles and registrations on a daily basis.
Mary remarried in February 1974 to William Storey. They divorced in 1977. Mary retired from the State in November 1995 and immediately went on vacation to Miami, Florida.
During her retirement she spent many hours doing her favorite things such as: reading, taking long baths and country walks, spending time with her family, volunteering, shopping, gardening and watching the jets take off and land at the airport park.
Mary had four grandchildren, one of which preceded her in death, Jason Wayne Hayman in April of 2012. She also had four great-grandchildren.
