Henry Elbert Hensley's Obituary

Mr. Hensley of near Bells was buried here Wednesday. Mr. Hensley formerly lived here and had a host of friends who were very much grieved to hear of his death. The family has the community's deepest sympathy. - "The Van Alstyne Leader" Van Alstyne, Grayson County, Texas, USA. Saturday, July 26, 1902. Page 2.

Henry's parents are, James Hensley and Elizabeth Harvey. There is a marriage record at Overton County, Tennessee courthouse. The original was destroyed during the Civil War.

Henry fought in the Civil War for the Confederacy lying about his age. He was actually 16 when he signed up. Afterward, he married Martha Jane Davis in 1866, and had 14 children. In 1897, he moved his family from Tennessee to Cannon, TX.

His children:

Jane, Nancy, James Porter, Christopher Columbus, Elvena, Louisa, Parilla, Mary E., Sally Elizabeth, Sarah Elizabeth, Ziller A., Cordelia (my 2nd Great Grandmother), Grover Cleveland, and Clothilda Lona

In 1920, his wife applied for a Widow's Pension. She had her son-in-law, James Miller (my 2nd Great Grandfather), help her and sign the documents. I have copies of the records if anyone wants them. I also have copies of his war record.

In August of 2015, Henry's 3rd Great Granddaughter, Katrina Dawn Miller (ME!!) joined The Daughters of the Confederacy under his name.
