Senior Chief Petty Officer Nicholas R. Scutti, U.S. Navy (Retired), 90, of Toms River, passed away on Monday, June 24, 2013 at Crystal Lake in Bayville. Born in Stamford, CT, he resided in Toms River since 1955. In 1940 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving his country proudly for 29 years. He served his tours of duty in the Pacific, serving aboard the USS Saratoga, than the USS Enterprise and lastly the USS Intrepid. After the war he was a Helicopter Flight Commander and served with the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo Space Recovery Fleets until his retirement in 1969 from Naval Air Station Lakehurst. Upon retiring, Nicholas attended and graduated from Ocean County College with an Associate degree in computer science and worked for Ocean County in Toms River from 1971 to 1993 as a computer specialist. He stayed self-employed for several years thereafter. Nicholas was an active parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Toms River and was a longtime usher. He was a life member the Fleet Reserve in Lakehurst; the American Red Cross, where he had donated blood to the bank 50 times a year; and one of the founding members and longtime coach of Toms River Little Indians Pop Warner Football . Nicholas was an avid N.Y. Giants and San Francisco Giants fan.
He was predeceased by his wife Margaret J. Scutti of 63 years in 2008 and his daughter Margaret (Scutti) Schwieters in 2011. Surviving are his three sons, Peter and his wife Michele, Joseph and his wife Judith, and Paul and his wife Denise; his sister Rita Vanacore; his son-in-law Ron Schwieters; six grandchildren, Michael, Alison, Matthew, Erin, Megan and Nicholas; his great grandchildren Michael and Ava and one on the way; and a very extended family.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 from 3 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at Anderson and Campbell Funeral Home, 703 Main St. Toms River. A graveside service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Cemetery in Toms River. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the New Jersey Association of Veteran Service Officers, P.O. Box 7628, East Rutherford, NJ 07073. Please make checks payable to N.J.A.V.S.O.
