HOLDEN – Norman A. Peterson, 80, of Briarwood Circle, Worcester, formerly of Holden, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at UMass Memorial – Belmont St. Campus after a brief illness. Norman was born in Worcester the son of George A. and Mabel A. (Swenson) Peterson and lived 54 years in Holden before moving to the Briarwood Community in 2007.

Norman graduated from Worcester Academy and Babson College. After graduating college, Norman enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served his country during the Korean War. Prior to enlisting, he met and later married, Mae E. Pouttu and moved to Holden where they raised their three children. In the Mid 60's, Norman co-founded Peterson Steel Corp. with his father and continued working there until the time of his death.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church of Holden, Tower Hill Botanical Garden in Boylston, Worcester Country Club, New England Iron League, and the American Society of Metals. He served on the Board of Director's of All Faiths Cemetery and the Masonic Learning Center for Dyslexic Children, both in Worcester.

Norman was proud of his Masonic affiliations including: The Rufus Putnam Lodge in Rutland, the Scottish Rite Bodies of Worcester (including the Worcester Lodge of Perfection, Goddard Council Princess of Jerusalem, and Lawrence Chapter of Rose Croix, Boston Consistory), Aleppo Temple Shrine in Wilmington and the Worcester County Shrine Club. In 2001, Norman was nominated and received the honorary Masonic "33rd Degree" in Indianapolis for his years of commitment and dedication to Freemasonry. Norman remained actively involved with the Worcester County Shrine Club by volunteering his time and talent driving children to the Shriners Hospital in Springfield for various treatments. He enjoyed traveling with wife, playing golf, gardening, and spending time with his family.

Norman was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Mae E. (Pouttu) Peterson in 2002. He leaves a son, Douglas N. Peterson and his wife LeeAnn of Holden; two daughters, Marcy L. Merzigian and her husband John of Holden and Diane L. Bashaw and her husband Paul of Rutland; a sister, Janet A. Peterson of Holden; seven grandchildren, Jamie and Bradford Merzigian, Ryan, Garrett, and Kristen Peterson, Christopher and Erika Bashaw. A brother, George A. Peterson, Jr., predeceased him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, June 17th at the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street (Rte. 122A), Holden. A memorial service honoring Norman's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 18th at the First Congregational Church of Holden, 1180 Main Street Interment will be private Saturday morning at All Faiths Cemetery, Worcester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Congregational Church, 1180 Main Street, Holden, MA 01520, or the Shriners Hospital for Children, 516 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104-2396.
