Robert was the son of Robert McClure Brookes and Grace Greenman Brookes. He was born in the Morgan Park neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. Robert attended Grinnell University at Grinnell, Iowa until the depression. He married to Erdwine Holekamp on 27 June 1936 at Saint Louis, Missouri. They moved to Toledo, Ohio in 1938 where Robert worked for Kraft Cheese. In 1946, he joined Williams and Company and was a successful steel salesman until retiring in 1975. In 1955, they moved to Bath Township at Lima, Ohio. Robert was a well-known square dance caller and teacher. He enjoyed golf and woodworking.
