PEORIA - Charles E. Birgam, age 68, of Peoria, formerly of 6914 N. Koerner Road, died at 10:30 p.m. Monday, March 5, 2007, at Lutheran Hillside Village.

He was born July 29, 1938, in Peoria to Edward A. and Lela M. Thompson Birgam. He married Elizabeth L. "Betty" Edwards Scherler in Peoria on March 17, 1979. She survives.

Also surviving is one stepson, Robert K. (and Carol) Scherler of Elmwood; two stepdaughters, Jody L. (and Roger) Wilkerson of Washington and Cindy S. (and Joe) Brone of Princeville; six stepgrandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; one sister, Darlene Heimberger of Peoria; and one brother, Dennis (and Donna) Miller of Washington.

He was preceded in death by one brother-in-law, Doug.
Charles worked as a maintenance custodian for Peoria Public Schools District 150 for 31 years, retiring in 1999.
He was a body builder and had participated in various local body building contests, and as a hobby he was learning to play the guitar.

He attended First Free Methodist Church of Peoria.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2007, at Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home in Peoria, with Pastor Tim Ward and the Rev. Paul Park officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Swan Lake Memory Gardens.
