Husband of Georgie Inee Cherry m. 04 May 1902
Father of William Carroll, Maida Iola & Elbert Stephen
My Grandpa (Papa)
As a young man Papa worked as a prison guard and help build the Texas State Railroad from Rusk to Palestine. This railroad today, is a popular tourist attraction, useing an old steam engine to transport passengers.
Steve and Inee married and lived in the small community of Forest, Texas. They were farmers. Papa grew watermelons, peanuts, sweet potatoes, corn and cotton as commercial crops. All of this was done with a mule and plow. I remember fondly, as a little girl, walking in Papas footprints and wondering if we were ever gonna get to the end of that row.
For their personal use they had cows, chickens, turkeys, ducks, one stubborn mule and of course they had guineas. Guineas were known for making a big racket when intruders were in the yard.
A hard life for them, and a wonderful learning experience for me.
