Rev. Dr. George Hill, of Blairsville, died on Thursday, at the advanced age of 80 years. His death closes an earnest pastoral service of 55 years in the Presbyterian church at Blairsville. The deceased was one of the oldest and most influential citizens of Blairsville and was well known throughout the southern portion of the county.
He was born near Palmer's Fort, Westmoreland county, September 18, 1815. He was educated in Jefferson college and in1840 was ordained pastor of the Blairsville Presbyterian church. This was his first and last charge and for over 55 years he has remained as pastor of this congregation.
About eight years before his death, on account of his advanced age, the honor senior pastor was conferred, while Rev. J.W. Criswell was called co-pastor. Although he was exceeded intellectually by many in the pulpit, his influence was great and the fruits of his labor for the church were manifested on every side. He was directly interested in the organization of the Blairsville Seminary in 1851, and was the promoter of everything which would enlighten or advance the standard of his neighborhood.
He is survived by his wife and five children. The living children are Mrs. J.N. Mitchell of Cicero, Ill.; Mrs. Preston Brown, of Peoria, Ill.; Rev. George HIll, pastor of the Presbyterian church at Beechwood, Pa.; Misses Helen and Harriet, who remain at home. Interment took place in the Blairsville cemetery.
