Asheville -- S.M. Buddy Patton , 82, of Asheville , died Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2007, at his home. The son of the late Robert Roy and Rose Sternberg Patton, Buddy was born and raised in Asheville and was a direct descendent of James Patton, for whom Patton Avenue is named.

Buddy was a World War II Army veteran, having joined the army at the age of 17. He served in Alaska and in the Army of Occupation in Japan. After the war, Buddy returned to Asheville and was employed by his uncle, Joe Sternberg. In 1950, he began his automotive career with his father-in-law, Harry Blomberg. In 1991, Buddy became president of Harry's Cadillac Pontiac GMC, and in that same year he began the project of converting Biltmore Industries properties into the Grovewood Gallery Complex. Buddy was renowned for his various philanthropic interests and believed very strongly in giving back to the community in which he lived and loved.

He was a member of Temple Beth Ha Tephila. He was also a charter member of The Monday Morning Board Meeting, which met for over 35 years. In 2002, he and his wife, Marilyn, were awarded the first annual Tocqueville Community Service Award, given by the United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County.

Buddy is survived by his wife of 57 years, Marilyn Blomberg Patton ; three children, Lynn Patton and her husband, James Paul, of San Diego, Patricia Patton Grimes and her husband, Junius, of Asheville , and Harry Robert Patton and his wife, Lisa, of Asheville ; three grandchildren, Anna Grimes, Lindsay Patton and Harry Robert Patton Jr., all of Asheville ; sisters, Marjorie P. Cunningham, of Shawnee Mission, Kan., and Annette P. Dungan, of Ocean City, N.J.; and sister-in-law, Barbara A. Blomberg, of New York City. Buddy also has several nieces and nephews who are very special to him, as well as a beloved special member of the family, Coleen Moss. He also leaves behind his best friend and companion, Sparky, who never left Buddy's side.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue, Asheville . The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Temple Beth Ha Tephila, with Rabbi Robert Ratner officiating. Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
