He was furloughed from the hospital for 60 days from June 9, 1863. Pvt Adair was captured on May 7, 1864 near Spottsylvania. He arrived at Belle Plains, Virginia, on May 18, 1864, and was transferred to, and received at Elmira, New York, on August 17, 1864, from Point Lookout, Maryland. He died on May 19, 1865 of pneumonia.

Hamilton W Adair married Mary J Wilson on February 14, 1854, in Troup County, Georgia (Georgia Marriage Records, online). Wayman Adair, farmer, age 27, and Mary Adair, 22, are listed in the 1860 federal census in Talladega, Alabama, with children Francis, 5, and Ada, 3. Also in their household was Reuben Reynolds, 22, laborer. Mary Jane apparently never remarried. In the 1900 census, the widowed Mary Jane Adair, 73, was living with her daughter, Francis C Adair, 45, and her family in Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama. She had had 5 children and 2 were living.
Mary J Adair filed for Relief for Confederate Soldiers' Widows in Calhoun County, Alabama, in at least the years 1893 to 1901.
