He lived most of his life in Madison county, Iowa and was a member of the New Hope Christian Union Church. He married Berniece Katherine Sheldon, July 5, 1932 in Bethany, Missouri. They had one son.
Carl was found dead at Pammel State Park of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The death was ruled a suicide.
