He was born to Loula Sherrill and Pleasant Melvin Cook on May 23, 1918 in Green County, Kentucky. His family traveled west to Forsyth, Montana where he grew up with his eight brothers and sisters. Later the family moved to Sumner, Washington.

Loyd worked as part of the Civil Conservation Corp until he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He was called up a second time during the Korean conflict as an officer in the U.S. Air Force. Loyd worked as a Crew Chief for the Coast and Geodetic Survey at Jim Creek near Arlington.

Later, he would begin a career that would last 34 years to his retirement at NAS Whidbey. There he worked as a Construction Representative in Building and Maintenance for the Navy at Ault Field. Loyd made his primary home with family in Oak Harbor, Washington.

Shortly after his retirement, he and wife Doris moved to Burlington, Washington where he continued working for Skagit County Building and Codes as a Compliance Inspector. He finished his working career working for Concrete Norwest as a soils and concrete analyst for work on the Paccar truck testing facility and Bellingham Library.

Loyd was preceded in death by both his parents and all of his siblings.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Doris Cook, of Burlington; son, Don (Peggy) Cook, of Burlington; daughter, Linda (Bill) Carley, of Walpole, MA; six grandchildren: Cynde (Scott) Revis, of Scappoose, OR and great-grandchildren, Paul and Syrina; Suzanne (Eric) Ibsen, of Gilbert, AZ and great-grandchildren, Benjamin and Lucas; Damon Cook and fiancée, Amanda Elliott, of Bellingham, and Daniel Carley, Chris Carley and Natalie Carley, all of Walpole, MA; and several caring and thoughtful nieces and nephews.
