He served as an Army sergeant during the Korean War, where he taught a leadership school at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
He received his B.A. degree from Iowa State Teachers College with a major in physical education and his master's degree in counseling from State College of Iowa (UNI).
He was head football and track coach at Grundy Center for seven years and head football and track coach at Iowa Falls for four years.
In 1964, the family moved to Cedar Rapids, where he was a counselor at Roosevelt Junior High School for three years, Washington High School for seven years and Jefferson High School until retirement in 1992.
He was an outstanding athlete, avid runner and walker.
He was a member of the State Counselors Association and UNI Alumni Association.
He married Virginia McGovern on Feb. 16, 1952, in Waterloo, and she survives him. Other survivors are; daughters, Joan (Jon) Lorence of Solon and Sheri (James) Butler of Davenport; sons, Brian (fiancee, Laura) of Cedar Rapids and Todd (Patricia) of Alamogordo, N.M.; a sister, Dona (Donald) Wills of Marshalltown; grandson, Clark Butler; three granddaughters, Jena, Jesse and Jill Lorence; and nephews, Dane Wills of Marshalltown and David Wills of Michigan.
An educational memorial fund in his name has being established.
