The son of John & Mary (John) Lobaugh, he married Mary Hartzell and fathered Ephraim (b. 12/29/42, d. 07/29/43), Angelia (b. 08/16/44, d. 09/09/64), infant (b./d. 1845), Emma J. (b. 10/08/46, d. 09/24/47), Mary (b. 94/19/47, d. 07/27/48), Steven Trovilla (b. 04/25/51), Susan (b. 08/17/53 - married Kunkle Arndt), Margaret (b. 08/24/56, d. 09/11/56), and John R. (b. 01/30/61, d. 08/02/64). In 1850, he was living in Newport, Perry County, but in 1860 was a merchant residing in Greensburg, Westmoreland County.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at an unknown age in Greensburg August 26, 1861, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg September 20 as 1st sergeant of Co. I, 11th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was seriously wounded in the West Woods at the battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862. He died as a 1st sergeant and was posthumously promoted to the rank of 2nd lieutenant. Oddly, he is not found in the company register, muster roll, or the Pennsylvania Archives ARIAS file but is in the company descriptive list and has compiled military service records.
Because he was from Perry County, Newport Post No. 297, G.A.R., was named in his honor. He is buried in Antietam National Cemetery.
