BIRTH & IMMEDIATE FAMILY

Ellen is the second daughter and third child of Edward and Sarah Jane Hickinson Cullen. She is the younger sister of John Francis and Elizabeth, the older sister of James, Edward Joseph, Susan M. (Dorgan), William Francis, Mary, Sarah, Catherine “Kitty” (Nelson) and Francis Joseph Cullen. Eleven children in toto.

She came into this world on Sunday, August 4, 1872 at the family homestead on 97th Street by 4th Avenue. Her mom Sarah Jane was a young 22 years of age, soon to be 23 in a couple of months, her dad Edward is reported as being age 30. Although fairly young himself, Edward had already served in the Civil War in which he was injured and taken prisoner. At the time of Ellen’s birth Edward was a cattle driver – a drover – as was his father-in-law and brother-in-law James Hickinson – Ellen’s maternal grandfather and uncle. Refer to her dad Edward’s memorial (link below) for further in-depth details.

START OF HER OWN FAMILY

Although her life spans less than a score and two years, she did have a daughter with Josef Sachs (refer to daughter’s memorial – link below), Sarah Cullen-Sachs, born January 6th, 1892. I take it that her daughter was named after her baby sister who passed on after 6 months, who in turn was named after their mom Sarah. Although records indicate that Ellen always went by her Cullen surname, as did her daughter for most of her short life, her death certificate was filed as her having been married.

I have found a birth record within the “New York, New York City Births, 1846-1909”, that records their daughter as Matilda rather than Sarah. This record has Joseph Sachs as the father and Nellie Cullen Sachs as the mother. Joseph (also found as Josef) is noted as being age 24. So, given a birth during the first week of January, odds are that he would afterwards turn age 25. Ellen, aka Nellie, is noted as age 19, which fits with her August 1872 birth.

Refer to the memorial for her daughter, Sarah Cullen Sachs, for further details.

TRAGEDIES IN A LIMITED WORLD

Her daughter Sarah had just turned two years of age a week before Ellen’s death. While her mother got to realize love for her child, her child Sarah missed out on realizing it during her mom’s time here on earth. However, I’m sure the large Cullen family did all they could to compensate, as Sarah was always fully within the family to the time of her death, seventeen years after her mom, in 1911.

From what I’ve been able to discern so far, Ellen essentially spent her life within an area of a few blocks, say 94th – 97th streets, around 4th Avenue, although she may have traveled outside of this range from her mid-teens to very early twenties for work. However, her death certificate reported that she had no occupation. I guess they overlooked the fact that she was a mother of a toddler.

Unfortunately, Ellen passed away at the early age of 21-1/2 years. She saw the passing of her 6-month-old infant sister just before her 13th birthday, her sister Mary from tuberculosis after having turned 16. Mary had passed away just 3 days after their dad Edward who had a fatal fall from a flag pole that fractured his skull. Ellen herself would leave in just over five (5) years after her dad and sister Mary.

FINAL DAYS OF HER EATHLY VISIT

Ellen was being attended to by a doctor from Tuesday, November 28, 1893 until the day before her death. Note that her dad’s fatal accident was 5 years earlier on November 29, 1988. She passed on about 1:00 P.M., Saturday, January 13, 1894. Ellen succumbed to an eight-week battle with phthisis pulmonalis, id est, pulmonary tuberculosis. A contributing cause of her death was asthenia, a common symptom of wasting and muscular skeletal diseases. It is also listed as a direct cause of her death. In this regard, cross reference her brother William’s memorial (link below), who did have muscular-skeletal symptoms. While she left her mother’s womb on the first day of the week, her Spirit left this world on Saturday, the last day of the week. That is, she was birthed on the first day of the week and entered heaven on the last day of the week.

Her attending physician, Dr. Brinkmann, signed and filed her death certificate. His address was at 1443 Lexington Avenue, by the corner of East 94th Street, just blocks away from the Cullen abode. Funeral services were provided by Jos. F. Smith who was located at 1497 3rd Avenue, also in the same area of Manhattan’s upper eastside.

Her earthly remains were interred at Calvary Cemetery that Monday, January 15th, 1894, where she joined her infant sister Sarah, her father Edward and her sister Mary. Over time they were joined by her brother John Francis, her daughter Sarah Sachs and lastly by Edward Joseph.
