On the 1880 Census, Ulrich was listed as a farmer in Benson, Illinois living with his parents. He lived in Minonk, Illinois. He was employed in the clothing business, grocery and general merchandise, and ran the grain elevator. In 1899, he purchased the Fred S Horneman elevator in Champaign, Illinois. Around 1905, he purchased the J.A. Simpson elevator, which he operated until his retirement in 1935. In August 1923 while checking on the status of a rabbit that he had hit with his car, Ulrich was hit and run over by a car driven by Ben Warnke. Luckily he only sustained minor injuries.
