Obituary:
Hobart Allen Smith was born on a farm in Banner township near Smith Center, Aug. 21, 1896. He was a son of the soil. His parents, William H. and Sarah A. Smith, were farmers and he followed in their footsteps.
Just as he was reaching young manhood, World War I came along and he was one of the young men from this county who served his country in the Navy during that conflict.
Returning from service, he went back to the farm.
On May 21, 1924, he was united in marriage to Miss Ruby Miller of Smith Center. To this union was born one daughter, Kathleen, now Mrs. Martin Veeh of Los Angeles, California.
He became a very successful farmer and stockman. His joy was to see plant life spring from the soil he had so carefully prepared. He liked to feed livestock and watch them grow and fatten.
His responsibilities as a citizen were not forgotten. He served on his township board. Then because of, his good judgement and his sense of fairness he was encouraged to become a candidate for county commissioner from the Second District. He served in that capacity for 20 years and until he voluntarily ceased to be a candidate for the office.
Mr. Smith was a quiet, soft man in both public and private life. He was open and above-board in everything he did, whether in his own private dealings or in his service to the public. He wasn't the type of man who believed in building himself up by tearing others down. He was a good neighbor, a kind and loving husband and father.
About eight years ago he and Mrs. Smith moved from the farm to Smith Center but his interest in the farm continued.
About two months ago he became ill. Later he became a patient in Smith County Memorial hospital where he passed away Saturday Nov. 3, 1962.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Christian church in Smith Center. He was also a loyal member of U. S. Center Post 220 of The American Legion and of the local Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
Survivors in the immediate family are his devoted companion; his daughter Kathleen, her husband, Martin Veeh and their three children; a sister, Mrs. Merritt Munsinger and a brother, Roy Smith, both of Smith Center.
Proceeding him in death were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Smith.
