Carl D. Simmons, 74, of Janesville, died on Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005, at Haven House Hospice. He was born in Janesville on Jan. 25, 1931, son of the late Earl and Nancy (Lawrence) Simmons. Carl attended Janesville schools and joined the U.S. Army on Nov. 11, 1950, serving during the Korean Conflict. He reenlisted for a second tour of duty on Aug. 18, 1954, serving in France with the Military Police, and he was Honorably discharged on Aug. 1, 1957. Carl married the former Mary Ann Jacoboski on Oct. 16, 1970, at Loras College Chapel in Dubuque, IA. Mary Ann, a junior high school teacher, was introduced to Carl by one of her seventh grade students, Cathy Sagaitis, who told her she had a family friend who would be just perfect for her. They met at the former Tanglefoot Roller Rink and their relationship was just Providential. When Carl was younger he left school in the seventh grade and rode the rails for a few years and became part of the "Hobo Jungle". After he was old enough to get a job Carl returned to Janesville, working for the City of Janesville reading water meters, and later worked for Kimball Construction and Wellnitz Builders. After working construction for many years Carl finally realized the value of a high school diploma and returned to school and proudly received his GED in 1974. He continued his education at Blackhawk Technical College and received his CNA certification. Carl worked at Cedar Crest Health Center for 18 ½ years, retiring in 1992. Carl later attended Clown Camp at the University of LaCrosse in 1993 and brought much joy to older and younger individuals. Carl was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he was involved with the Knights of Columbus Honor Guard, Marriage Preparation Classes, Foccus Program, CCD Classes, Confirmation Retreat, and was active with the youth at St. Patrick's. He also volunteered at special events at Mercy Hospital. Carl was a very loving, giving, strong, forgiving and patient person who was an excellent husband, perfect father and a proud grandfather, who must have been hand picked by God. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary Ann; a daughter, Mitzi (Ray) Mason and 2 grandchildren, Dani and Wren, all of Janesville; a sister, Virginia (Eugene) Wheeler of Ft. Atkinson, WI; brothers and sisters-in-law: Louis and Donna Jacoboski of Fairfield, OH, Leonard and Grace Jacoboski of Janesville, A.L. "Jake" and Mary Jacoboski of Florida and John and Connie Jacoboski of Stevens Point, WI; many nieces and nephews, who he loved dearly. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by 3 sisters and their spouses: Hazel and Lyle Mickelson, Dorothy and Bob Grant, Marlene and Freddie Jewell; a brother, Earl "Zeke" Simmons; and brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Nancee Jacoboski.
