Ruth E. Miller, 96,of Newtown Square, a retired professor and former head of the microbiology department at the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, died Sunday at Bryn Mawr HHospital.

Dr. Miller spent her career at the college, which was founded in 1850 to train women in medicine. She joined the staff of the school, now the Drexel University College of Medicine, after earning a doctorate in bacteriology in 1934 from the University of Pennsylvania.

She began working at Woman's Medical as a microbiology and bacteriology teacher. She became a full professor and conducted research in immunology and antibiotics that was published in medical journals. In 1961, Dr. Miller was appointed head of the college's microbiology department. She retired in 1968.

Born in Philadelphia, Dr. Miller earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in bacteriology from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. She never married and for many years shared a home with her sister, Julia Miller, who died before her.

Dr. Miller was a fellow of several professional organizations, including the American Public Health Association and American Association of Immunologists. She served on the board of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and in 1972 she received the school's alumni award, The Upper Darby Business Association named Dr. Miller its woman of the year in 1980.

Dr. Miller was a gardener and member of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and St. Andrew Church in Drexel Hill. She is survived by a brother, Dr. William H. Miller, and 10 nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass was said at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Church 3500 School Lane, Drexel Hill. Burial was at Arlington Cemetery in Drexel Hill.
