William Chapman married Miss Martha Jane Richards on 20 February 1858 in Anderson, Missouri. The couple moved to Texas in 1874. Rev. Chapman was a Missionary Baptist preacher, and his life on the Texas frontier was one of sacrifice and unselfish devotion. Rev. Chapman was the pastor of the Richland Springs Baptist Church at the time of his death.

Their daughter Kate married Claude Henry Garrett after his first wife Annie died.
