Lyman Curtis Childers, a.k.a. Pete Zebich, 88, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. After a 6 year battle with pulmonary fibrosis, Lyman passed away peacefully at home on Monday, April 14, 2014, with his family around him.
Lyman was born in Pillager, Minnesota. He was in the class of 1943 at Ely Memorial High School. In 1942, he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Seabees in the South Pacific during WWII. He attended junior college before and after his years in the service.
Lyman's first job was as a gandy dancer on the railroad for Henry Nickolson. After returning from WWII, he was the very first employee at Bill Rom's Canoe Country Outfitters. Throughout his years in Ely, Lyman worked as a surveyor, fishing guide, at the Ely Miner, and at Reserve Mining Company.
Lyman was an avid outdoorsman and loved camping, fishing, hunting, berry picking, wild ricing, canoeing, and all the nature-filled activities the Ely area has to offer. He was known for sharing his favorite berry-picking spots with others, and enjoyed taking them out to pick, too. He was a member of the Ely archery club and the Rod-and-Gun Club. A multi-talented craftsman, Lyman was a woodworker and wood-burner, and made wood carvings, diamond willow furniture and birchbark baskets, among many other things. At age 86, his daughter Shelley taught him the fine art of quilting, and he made 17 quilts during his later years.
Lyman loved to travel. He and his wife Arlene have been to all 50 states and every Canadian province. Their travels have taken them from the tip of Key West to the end of the road in Homer, Alaska, and everywhere in between.
Lyman was a member of the Ely United Methodist Church, a lifetime member of the VFW, and a member of the Polar Bear Club in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. He was a regular blood donor, donating over five gallons of blood during his life.
Both Lyman and his alter-ego Pete enjoyed a good joke and lots of laughs. Lyman would be the first to say that Pete's occasional letters to the Ely Echo were a tribute to the love of Ely and the love of a good story.
He was preceded in death by his siblings Frederick, Warren, Owen, Robert, and Pauline Guiliani.
He is survived by his wife Arlene, daughter Shelley (Joe) Oxley; son Jim; daughter Jean (Tim) O'Harris; grandson Todd (Jody) and great grandson Elijah; granddaughter Cameo Gillson (Jason) and great granddaughter Coco; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend and ricing partner Mark Fisher.
The family would like to thank Dr. James Montana, East Range Hospice and the many family and friends who have been with us along Lyman's journey.
A memorial service will be held at the Ely United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 26, at 1:00 p.m. Send memorials to VFW Post 2717, 2 W. Sheridan St., Ely, MN, 55731.
