Charles Ernest Batte, age 81, of Grants Pass, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at Arbor House.

Charles was born September 11, 1932 in Leland, Mississippi to Elvyn & Frankie Lucille Batte. In 1950 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in Korea. Following his tour in Korea, he was assigned to Salzburg, Austria where he met and married Erna Kern. While in the Army he was also stationed in Mainz and Munich, Germany, Kansas, California and Colorado. In 1964 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and spent the next six years overseas in Spain, Turkey and Germany. Upon retirement in 1970 he returned to Mississippi, then moved to Colorado, California and finally Grants Pass in 2001. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and held a variety of positions in the civilian sector.

Charles enjoyed reading, politics and writing.

He is survived by his daughter, Jo Woerner of Grants Pass, Oregon; a sister, Barbara Wooten of Arkansas; four granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Erna; a son, Donald; and a stepdaughter, Heide Marie.
