Lady Frances Plantagenet, though married twice, did not assume the surname of her last husband, as was customary with the aristocracy when a woman's family title had more importance than her husband's.

She was the daughter of Sir Arthur Plantagenet, Viscount Lisle, and Lady Elizabeth Grey, 6th Baroness Lisle. Her parents had three daughters together. Frances Plantagenet of York, and her two sisters Elizabeth Plantagenet of York, and Bridget Plantagenet of York.

Frances, first married her step brother raised in another household, Sir John Bassett V, the son of Sir John Basset IV and Lady Honor Grenville. They were married February 15, 1538, in Umberlegh, Devon, England and had three children:
* Eleanor Bassett b 1538
* Edward Bassett b 1539
* Sir Arthur Bassett 1540-1586 m Eleanor Chichester, dtr of John
