Emmitt was born in Florida, afflicted with ichthyosis. The condition made his skin hard and scaly; only his face and hands were smooth. He fell in love with a young girl by the name of Percilla, who worked for the Lauther as the " Monkey Girl." They fell in love and were married in 1938. Percilla later gave birth to a baby girl, who died of pneumonia shortly thereafter. They later adopted a son Tony. The Bejanos eventually ran their own show and exhibited themselves as the "World's Strangest Married Couple." They were married for 57 years. Emmitt died on May 14, 1995.
