Jimmy was the oldest son of Monroe and Cora Conrad. He was the older brother of Louise and Ethel and was very close to both of his sisters. Jimmy's grandmother, Irene Hurdle, lived next door to the family. He was crazy about her. You could say his grandmother raised him, since his mother worked all the time. When Jimmy was 12 years old – in 1923, his grandmother died of cancer. Jimmy lived at 727 27th Street, NE (now GW University) when he met Marion. He respected his father a great deal. Many people remember how Jimmy could play the banjo. He was a member of the Episcopalian Church and was baptized at St. Episcopal Church on 24th Street off Pennsylvania Avenue. He sang in the choir at St. Albans Cathedral until his voice changed. He worked many odd jobs to buy a car. He would make and sell lunch sandwiches at the government buildings and during the summer he worked at Chest Nut Farms Dairy Place. He paid $75 for his first car, a Model T Ford, which his father found for him. When we were dating he worked with the presses and was a messenger at Government Printing office, but felt that that job didn't make enough. When we married, Jimmy he was a time clerk and also worked at the phone company. He attended the Ben Franklin Business College and the IBM school where he learned about the Univac computer and then taught others how to use. He eventually became a supervisor, then retired in 1966 as the Chief of the Payroll section. Jimmy was greatly loved by his wife Marion, children and grandchildren. His mother-in-law saw him as her own son.
