Lorentz was the son of Johann Georg Matz and wife Agnes Catherine Stauch. (Lorentz is named after his maternal grandfather Lorenz Stauch.)

The family came to American in 1753, after two of their 4 children died in Germany. Unfortunately the mother Agnes died at sea. The father Johann arrived with 2 sons, Johann and Lorentz. Sadly the father died in 1759, leaving 11yo Johann and 7yo Lorentz, who were raised by different farm families in the area.

Lorentz married Barbara Reischert (also spelled Richards) and their children include Johannes aka John, Christian, John George, Daniel, John William, and Johann Jacob.

Lorentz was a weaver by trade, and was a deacon at Cacusi (Hain's) Reformed Church in 1811.
