Richard R. Tiemersma, aged 87, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, July 4, 2006. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen J. Tiemersma (nee: Hager). He is survived by his children, Robert Tiemersma and Jane and Steve Vogel; two grandchildren; one sister, Ada Dekker; and many nieces and nephews.

Dick was born in Roseland, Illinois, in 1919, the youngest of eight children. He graduated from Roseland School for Christian Instruction, Chicago Christian High, and Calvin College. He served in the military from 1942 to 1946, by which time he had earned the rank of Captain. Dick received his masters degree and Ph.D. in English literature from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and in 1955 he began his career at Calvin College. He taught English at Calvin College for 29 years, during which time he earned a reputation as a tough grader and a wry storyteller. Dick loved music (he played violin in the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra in his youth and sang in a veterans' choir and the Calvin Alumni Choir), fishing, and woodworking, and he took pride in having the lushest lawn and most prolific tomato plants in the neighborhood.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Calvin College Chapel with Rev. Michael Abma and Rev. Peter Jonker officiating. Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends may call at the Zaagman Memorial Chapel Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Richard and Kathleen Tiemersma Scholarship Fund of Calvin College. Zaagman Memorial Chapel
