STOKESDALE – Hugh Madison Atkinson, 76, loving and devoted husband of Janice Atkinson, peacefully went home to be with the Lord, March 31, 2014, at the Hospice Home of Rockingham County.

He was born June 6, 1937, in Spencer, WV, the youngest child of the late George Washington Atkinson and Viney Carpenter Atkinson. He retired from the US Army in 1981, after over 20 years in the Medical Corps. He was the recipient of the Bronze Star for his service during Vietnam. After retirement from the Army, he continued his nursing career and retired in 1998. He was a member of Mayodan Church of God. He loved the outdoors, gardening, attending church and fellowship with his church family. His foremost passions were God, his love and devotion to his wife, Janice, and his family. He had a passion for helping others and was a friend to anyone in need.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers and three sisters.

Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Janice Darlene Tilley Atkinson; sons, John Henry Atkinson and George Stephen Atkinson; daughter, Cindy Lou Rosado (Eddie); step sons, Tommy Smith (Christy), Jeff Smith, Mike Smith (Alyssa) and Doug Smith (Paige); step daughter, Amy S. Rickles (Jamie); half sister, Georgia Faye Tavanaris; step brother, Troy Wagoner; four grandchildren; seventeen step grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 5, 2014, at Mayodan Church of God with Reverend Charles Greene officiating. Interment will follow in MayodanMunicipalCemetery with military rites by Rockingham County Honor Guard and N.C. National Guard.
