Malcolm Daniel Lane II was the son of Malcolm Daniel Lane and Helga Nielsen.

He married Patricia Sonquist on March 17, 1951 and they enjoyed 60 years together.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife. He is survived by his sister, Alice Lane White; his children, Claudia Jay Lane and Danny Lane.

Dan received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Iowa State University, a Ph.D. degree from the University of Illinois. His research career, beginning with faculty positions at Virginia Tech and New York University School of Medicine, led to the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (1969-present) where he served as DeLamar Professor and Department Director from 1978 to 1997. He served as Distinguished Service Professor from 1997-2013. Lane contributed to his Department as researcher, teacher, leader and mentor. He was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences in 1987.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the M. Daniel and Patricia Sonquist Lane Endowed Lecture or The Graduate Program in Biological Chemistry, both at Johns Hopkins.
